Hospitality industry is not
free from environmental influences. Various factors are affecting the industry both
positively and negatively. Following factors may be considered as opportunities
and challenges to hospitality industry.

Weather and Climate: Weather and climatic
conditions of many nations are highly attractive to visitors and tourists.
Costa Rica, Cyprus, Greece, Malta etc. are well known for their good weather
conditions. According to Climate Risk Index (CRI – it is a method of ranking
countries with bad weather) the countries such as Haiti, Zimbabwe, Fiji etc.
have severe weather conditions.
Political Stability: Political stability of nations
is very crucial for attracting tourists. The countries with political issues
and riots create a hostile environment for tourism.
Government Policy: it means the attitude of
government towards tourism. Now, most of the countries are promoting tourism as
it brings in lot of foreign exchange.
Natural Calamities: Some countries in the world
are suffering a lot out of frequent natural calamities such as tsunami,
volcano, typhoons and earth quakes. Such natural calamities create an
atmosphere of fear and it adversely affect tourism.
Geographical Location: Geographical location of
certain nations are capable of attracting many tourists. Countries near to
north and south poles have extreme weather conditions and it may hinder many
tourists.
Economic Conditions: Hospitality is mainly an entertainment
industry. In times of financial crisis people prefer to spend only for
essentials. In times of problems, they set aside travel, hotels and
restaurants.
Globalisation: Globalisation is the process
of opening boundaries of nations to other countries. On one side it helps
tourism by providing easy access to other countries. On the other side, it
brings the problems of some countries to other nations very easily.
